Friends of my youth

When I was little, maybe 1st through 4th grade or so, I was friends with the Amackers. Mom was German, Dad was in the Army. Oldest in the family was Iris, then there was Wilfred (about my age), Sissy (cannot remember her real name) and then the baby, Richard. We all lived in Spring Lake, just a stone throw away from Fort Bragg, NC. I remember when they got a color television. We did not have one, and never did as long as I was at home. I remember one Sunday, after supper, I slipped out my bedroom window and snuck over to Sissy's house so I could see just the opening of the Wonderful World of Disney. Tinkerbell appeared on the screen and made the most beautiful colorful fireworks. I remember I made it back home, never got caught.
Color TV became a fascination for me. The folks next door (our tenants in one of 2 duplexes Dad had) were a young military couple. They had a color TV in their bedroom. I used to lean on the back of the sofa, looking out our window and into theirs when both sets were tuned to the same show. I remember watching "The Second Hundred Years" that way.

Welcome

Welcome to the Childhood Memories blog. This space is set aside for folks of all ages to stroll down memory lane, to share and remember anew the little things that made your childhood unique.

Let me start off by talking about candy...the candy of our youth. Without revealing exactly how long ago that youth actually was (if you are old enough, you will figure it out for yourself)...let me just mention a few things that fire up my brain cells.

Not too long ago, I was at a mall in Greensboro NC with a few professional colleagues of mine, when we happened upon a candy store. Being in an adventurous, but not terribly hungry mood, we stopped in. Before long we were finding candies that we had not seen in years.
Remember ....

  • Those little, and I do mean little, wax bottles that looked like a Pepsi bottle? And you bit off the top and sucked out the colored liquid inside? How long has that been?
  • How about Pop Rocks? Those little crystals that exploded in your mouth, and heaven help you if you swallowed a cola at the same time, LOL.
  • Remember big wax lips?
  • What about orange wax harmonica's? You could play them, then you could chew on them. No on in the group remembered those,.....I hope someone out there reading this does. I would hate to thing I am actually hallucinating a memory.

Ok, that gets me started for today. Please feel free to jump in and share memories of your own. Candy today, who knows what tomorrow?
